their journey

rings exchanged
and vows said.
kissing the bride
a promise made
circle of arms -
security,
warmth,
love.

love-making
unspoken commitment
her head on his chest -
togetherness,
soul-baring,
future.

years of the dance
as they move in unison -
breakfasts,
showers,
chores
and the special moments.

markings on the calendar
attempts to conceive
the love lost,
amidst the mechanics.
the ultrasound -
new beginning.

morning sickness
holding of the hair
wiping of the face
and carrying her to the bed.
finding the love again
still existing beneath the sheets
a kiss on the forehead -
unspoken “I love you”
and “everything will be fine”

months of fatigue
swollen feet
frustrated work schedule
and the little fights -
all forgotten
when they hold their baby
carefully passed on
from her arms to his
tears of joy in the eyes -
beginning of a new chapter.

years of parenthood,
commitments fulfilled
promises kept
responsibilities taken care of.

they hold hands
as they walk together
leaning on each other
for support
years of togetherness -
facing problems together,
blood pressure,
heart attacks,
arthritis,
still together
on the road leading to the inevitable.

their journey continues
despite all the odds
all promises kept -
security,
warmth,
love,
togetherness,
soul-baring
and the future.

watching the sunset
acceptance of the nearing end
their wrinkled hands
still intertwined
a kiss on the lips
that says “till death do us part”
