walking away

doing it the only way she knew
showing him that she cared
she pulled him closer in an embrace
and kissed his hair.

he lay silent in her arms
his tears soaked by her shirt
hours they spend in embrace
without saying a word.

he looked up at her finally and smiled
she smiled too but hers did not reach the eyes
they both know it was time -
and they had no other choice.

his bags are ready, packed to go -
the neatly folded uniform, ready to be worn
shoes polished, set to take him away -
from her and towards the unknown.

she stands at the door as he walks away -
without turning back to look at her
she continues watching him -
until he disappears at the end of the road..
