deep-rooted

come on, get up
it’s ok
don’t be so sad
they said

she wished they knew
wished they could see the talons of the demon

It’s not like
she did not want to get up
she could not
the talons dug deep in her head,
the bondage that held her in place.

she wished they could smell
the putrid breath that she did
hear the noise the demon made
that gave her the headache.
constant echoes of things gone wrong ..
reminders of abandonment..

she thought she’d gotten rid of the demon
finally she was able to breathe easy
face the world with a smile
but there was a piece left behind;
deep inside her mind
before she knew -
it grew into a full sized demon
engulfing her in its darkness
making her its slave.

people did not understand what happened to her
why she grew so silent
they assumed she was just sad for some reason-

she wished they knew
what she was going through
she wished there was someone
who could understand her silence.

she was not just sad;
she struggled to get free -
from the tight grip of the demon of depression.
